The logic is straightforward. Wake time is usually the variable outside your control, so counting backward from it works with the constraint. Step 2: Set a cycle floor for every night
A cycle floor is the minimum amount of sleep you'll accept on a given night, given its wake time. The hard bottom under every plan: adults still need at least seven hours per night, even on variable schedules. Floors protect that minimum deliberately instead of hoping it survives the week.
For the planning arithmetic, use 90-minute sleep cycles as the currency. The cycle count is a starting point, not a guarantee; individual nights vary, and anyone who has worked nights knows their sleep doesn't read the textbook. As a planning aid, counting in cycles gives you a repeatable way to convert a wake time into a bedtime.
The conversion runs backward, cycle by cycle. A 6 AM morning with a floor of five cycles means being asleep around 10:30 PM, before any buffer. A 9 AM morning with six cycles means being asleep around midnight.
On brutal mornings, you may not get five cycles and still function socially. Choose the shortfall consciously: go to four cycles because the flight demands it, and plan the recovery. A planned shortfall is a decision; an unplanned one is a surprise, and surprises are what this method exists to eliminate.
Step 3: Add the fall-asleep buffer, and widen it before early mornings
No realistic plan assumes you're asleep the moment the light goes off. Sleep latency, the time it takes to fall asleep, is the gap between your lights-out time and your cycle math.
Latency also behaves asymmetrically, and the asymmetry breaks early mornings. Sleep onset takes longer when you go to bed earlier than normal, because you're carrying less sleep pressure, and shorter when you stay up later than usual. So the buffer needs to widen precisely on the nights you're going to bed earlier than your body expects, which are the nights before unusually early wake times.
A practical rule: assume 15 minutes by default, and pad to 20 before a 6 AM morning. The extra padding feels wasteful at 10 PM and invaluable at 5:50 AM.
Two flags worth knowing from the same source. Consistently taking much longer than 20 to 30 minutes to fall asleep may indicate insomnia or another sleep issue. The worked example: one week, three kinds of morning
Here is the whole method applied to a mixed week: a 6 AM Monday flight, an 8 AM office day, a 9 AM Wednesday class, a 7 AM Thursday meeting, a late-start Friday, and an unrestricted weekend.

Read three rows and the pattern is clear. Monday is the week's hardest anchor: five cycles before a 6 AM wake means being asleep by 10:30 PM, and because that bedtime is earlier than the surrounding nights, the buffer widens to 20 minutes, putting lights-out at 10:10 PM. Wednesday is the recovery anchor: a 9 AM start lets six full cycles fit without a heroic bedtime. Saturday carries no fixed obligation, but it still gets a soft floor and a rough lights-out time so that Sunday night doesn't arrive as a circadian shock, and Sunday's wake time is deliberately set earlier, at 7:30, to cushion the slide back to Monday's 6 AM.

Step 4: The midweek reset after a surprise late night
A late work session, a night out, or plain insomnia will break the map sometimes. That's an expected event, not a failure. The map is a document you adjust, not a test you pass or fail.

Shift the next bedtime, or the next wake time on a variable day, in 15- or 30-minute steps over a few days rather than overcorrecting with one enormous recovery night.
